Vietnam Women's Volleyball Ranks 4th in Asia in 2025

The year 2025 concluded with significant highlights for Vietnam women's volleyball, with the national team setting historic benchmarks and confirming its steadily growing status in Asian volleyball.

In the FIVB year-end rankings, the Vietnam women's team placed 28th globally and secured 4th place in Asia, marking one of their best performances ever.

The first major highlight of the year for coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt’s squad came in June, when the Vietnam women’s team continued their dominance at the AVC Nations Cup. Winning the title for the third consecutive time, the red-shirted players defeated the Philippines 3-0 in the final, reaffirming their top position among Asia’s developing teams. This victory earned them over 28 FIVB points, helping Vietnam break into the world’s top 30 for the first time—a historic milestone.

Shortly after, the SEA V.League 2025 further showcased the strong progress of Vietnam women's volleyball. During the second leg, the team achieved a pivotal victory against Thailand. After trailing 0-2, with resilient spirit and enthusiastic home crowd support, Thanh Thúy and her teammates made a spectacular comeback to win 3-2. This was the first time in decades that Vietnam's women's team defeated Thailand, the top Southeast Asian rival. This result temporarily boosted Vietnam’s world ranking to 22nd—the highest in the nation’s volleyball history.

August marked a new chapter as Vietnam’s women’s team participated in the 2025 World Championship for the first time. This historic qualification came from finishing 4th at the 2023 Asian Championship, with Thailand, the continental champion and World Championship host, already qualified. Although they did not cause any upsets against strong teams like Poland, Germany, or Kenya, competing at the highest global level provided significant professional and experiential value.

Although they could not upgrade their medal at the 33rd SEA Games, what coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt’s team achieved was a very positive sign.

Closing out 2025, Vietnam’s women’s team faced Thailand at the 33rd SEA Games and narrowly lost 2-3 in an emotional final. Despite not changing their medal color, this match clearly demonstrated the narrowing gap between the two teams. However, since the SEA Games are not counted by FIVB for ranking points, Vietnam’s position remained unchanged after the tournament.

In the end, with 136.75 points, Vietnam women's volleyball ranked 28th worldwide and 4th in Asia, behind only Japan, China, and Thailand. This achievement brings great hope for the future because if Vietnam breaks into the world top 18, they will qualify for the VNL, an annual tournament featuring the world’s elite teams. This would be a strategic step forward, helping Vietnam women's volleyball continue to close the gap with the global elite.
