Vietnam Women's Volleyball in 2025: What Are the Limits?

The year 2025 ended for Vietnam women's volleyball with a multifaceted tone. It was not merely about regional trophies or emotionally charged games, but also a crucial year to better understand their real position on the continental and global volleyball scene.

After years of steadfast investment, the women's team entered 2025 with a distinctly changed attitude compared to previous years: more confident, more proactive, and no longer positioned as absolute "followers" in Southeast Asia. The results achieved during the year clearly reflect this steady accumulation.

Within the Southeast Asian competitions, Vietnam women's volleyball continued to demonstrate stability and resilience. Matches against Thailand, once a tough "mountain" to climb, no longer resembled one-sided pursuits.

Instead, they became true battles where victories were decided by a few crucial moments. The last three finals Vietnam played were all against Thailand. The Vietnamese women won one and lost two matches narrowly with 2-3 scores.

By clinching the AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup 2025 at Dong Anh Gymnasium (Hanoi), the Vietnamese girls once again confirmed their status as a Top 5 Asian team.

More important than individual match outcomes was how the Vietnamese team approached the game. Their organized playing style, variety in attack options, and ability to control the match tempo showed the team had moved beyond relying too much on inspiration or a few standout players. Vietnam women's volleyball in 2025 played more maturely, with greater experience and less emotional sway.

While regional tournaments brought confidence, the global stage presented a harsher reality. Facing teams with superior height, robust physical conditioning, and top-level experience, Vietnam struggled to maintain control of matches.

At the 2025 FIVB World Championship, Vietnam competed in Group G against strong teams like Poland and Germany but was eliminated early after quick defeats.

The differences in average height, jumping power, and defensive organization against European and leading Asian volleyball nations were clear. Early exits from major tournaments were not surprising but served as a clear reminder that to progress further, Vietnam women's volleyball cannot rely solely on spirit and pure technique.

Within this broader context, encouraging signs came from the youth teams. Their confident performances against strong opponents showed that the next generation of athletes is gradually adapting to the international competitive environment. More importantly, young players no longer exhibit the hesitancy or fear of mistakes that had long been a "disease" holding them back.

The arrival of promising young talents such as Bui Thi Anh Thao, Le Thuy Linh, and Le Nhu Anh strengthens the national team’s depth and opens opportunities for future team restructuring. This foundation is critical to prevent Vietnam women's volleyball from falling into a "short-term success" cycle.

Besides sporting matters, 2025 also witnessed considerable controversy around women's volleyball, from off-court disputes to public pressure on players. This raises increasing demands for management, media handling, and psychological support for athletes as the sport gains greater public attention.

Therefore, 2025 serves as a landmark year. Vietnam women's volleyball has traveled a long road, but to move into a new phase, a stronger transformation is necessary—not only in results but also in development thinking.

This is a difficult challenge but an essential path if they want to break out of regional boundaries and establish themselves on the Asian volleyball map.
