Revealing the controversial scoring play that caused Vietnamese volleyball to lose the gold medal, with the organizers having the final footage

A member of the Thai national coaching staff revealed that footage of the controversial scoring play in the 2025 SEA Games final has been recorded.

On the evening of December 15, 2025, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team lost 2-3 to Thailand in the SEA Games 33 final, earning the silver medal. The match was dramatic, with Vietnam winning the first set (25-19) and the fourth set (25-23), but Thailand came back to win the second, third, and fifth sets (25-23). The decisive point in the fifth set for Thailand was controversial: when Kiều Trinh avoided the ball, it fell to the floor. This was a sensitive and difficult moment to judge based on the television camera angle.

Many believed the ball was out, but the line judge ruled it in and awarded the point to Thailand, helping the host secure the gold medal.

Footage revealed by Mr. Somchai Donpraiyod

Vietnam did not challenge this situation because they had used up their Video Eyes Challenge rights. Slow-motion images showed the ball might have touched the line but were unclear, sparking debate among the Vietnamese volleyball community.

Recently, Somchai Donpraiyod, a member of the Thai coaching staff, posted a photo showing the ball touching the court line and explained: "The Video Challenge system never lies, as it uses real footage to accurately display the exact sequence of events in each situation."

Somchai clarified that the Vietnamese women's volleyball team had no challenge rights left because they had already used them: "One limitation is that the team with Challenge rights can request it anytime, sometimes using it as a tactic to extend time, rest players, or disrupt the opponent's rhythm."

Importantly, Somchai revealed that the challenge official had prepared images in advance for review, and in those images, the ball clearly touched the line.
