Sinner is set to compete in the 2026 Australian Open, aiming to win the title at Melbourne Park for the third consecutive time.
Unlike his last appearance as the world No. 1, this time Jannik Sinner arrives in Melbourne ranked No. 2 in the ATP, just behind Carlos Alcaraz. Although he won the ATP Finals, Sinner was overtaken by Alcaraz in the rankings due to points accumulated late in the season. This means that even if he successfully defends his Australian Open title, Sinner will not immediately reclaim the world No. 1 spot, as he has no additional points to gain while Alcaraz only needs to defend his quarterfinal results.
Nevertheless, the Italian player has set a long-term goal of regaining the ATP top ranking this year, especially since he has no points to defend in the next three months.
"That is definitely one of my major objectives. It will be challenging, but I’m happy to be back in the game. I focus on each day, each opponent, giving my 100%,"Sinner admitted.
Sinner is preparing to enter the Australian Open as one of the top contenders for the season’s first Grand Slam, benefiting from conditions considered very favorable for the 2001-born player.
As in many previous seasons, Sinner has chosen not to participate in any warm-up tournaments and will start his 2026 campaign directly at Melbourne Park.
"It’s wonderful to start the season here. Australians have a strong passion for sports, not only tennis but also rugby, cricket, and others. Being part of that atmosphere always feels special,"the 24-year-old player shared.
Despite lacking competitive matches before the tournament, Sinner believes he will quickly find his rhythm once the Australian Open begins. The two-time defending champion acknowledged that initial doubts are inevitable but emphasized his confidence from past achievements.
"At the start of the season, everyone has some doubts. But I have a lot of confidence because of what I have accomplished before. I look forward to a great connection with the crowd and will see how things unfold," he said.
