Recurring injuries led Stefanos Tsitsipas to drop sharply in the global rankings during 2025.
The Greek tennis player - Stefanos Tsitsipas recently attracted attention by admitting he seriously considered retirement in 2025 due to persistent pain and ongoing injuries. Tsitsipas shared this during a press conference ahead of the United Cup tennis tournament in Perth, Australia.
"There were times during the year when I asked myself: 'Why am I doing this and why am I causing myself so much pain?' Pain is not pleasant for an athlete, especially when it keeps recurring. Ultimately, for me, what matters most is being happy and not struggling with pain in the sport I love.", Tsitsipas candidly revealed.
The 1998-born player even confessed that he had thought about quitting if the situation persisted. "I would rather end it if things continued like this than keep enduring it... I just want to be happy with my current life, and if one day I can no longer compete, then perhaps I will have to give up.", Tsitsipas added.
Currently, the Greek player says he is completely pain-free and training normally in Australia. Notably, his father - Apostolos Tsitsipas - has returned to coaching after a short break Tsitsipas worked with Goran Ivanisevic last year.
This year’s United Cup features many top tennis stars such as Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Stan Wawrinka — who has confirmed that 2026 will be his final season. The tournament begins with matches between Spain and Argentina, and Greece and Japan, including men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles, promising exciting contests at the start of the new season.
