Manchester United has just appointed interim head coach Carrick, and the club’s next task is to continue the search for a permanent manager! Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the formal process to find the Red Devils’ official head coach has started, but this will not be resolved quickly.

Romano elaborated: "At this stage, Manchester United will start the necessary steps to determine potential candidates for the future head coach role. This will be a lengthy process, not something completed in a few days, but one that requires weeks or even months. The club will meet with candidates and their agents."
According to him, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS team initially approached two coaches, both of whom have declined Manchester United’s offer, stating they are currently not interested in considering the role.
Romano explained: "I can confirm that the two candidates considered by the INEOS group were Tuchel and De Zerbi. However, Tuchel is currently focused on matters in English football, and with the World Cup approaching, no agreement could be reached. De Zerbi’s attention is on Marseille. Both Tuchel and De Zerbi were candidates for Manchester United’s managerial position earlier in 2024, and INEOS held meetings with them. De Zerbi received Manchester United’s approval, but he was not the only coach endorsed."
These two coaches gained approval from Ratcliffe’s management team mainly because Manchester United wants both new signings and the new manager to have Premier League experience. Based on this criterion, Oliver Glasner, whose Crystal Palace contract is about to expire, Anthony Elanga with six months left at Bournemouth, Brazil’s coach Ancelotti, and the USA’s coach Pochettino all qualify, while Xavi and Nagelsmann lack Premier League experience.

It is reported that Manchester United insists they did not want to change managers mid-season, but Amorebieta’s results, especially his comments, forced the board to take action. Carrick has gained acceptance in the dressing room, particularly from leader-level players who have worked with him before, including captain Bruno Fernandes, the most experienced player Luke Shaw, the oldest player Tom Heaton, as well as Maguire, Diogo Dalot, and Amad Diallo.
Manchester United demands Carrick to stabilize the team after taking charge and achieve the goal of qualifying for the Champions League this season. This performance target was publicly announced by Sporting Director Jason Wilcox when he informed the Red Devils players of Ruben Amorebieta’s dismissal. This presents a challenge for Carrick, as changing the formation is not easy. Moreover, Carrick’s first two matches in charge are against Manchester City and Arsenal, and losing could drop the team below their current 7th place standing.
Sources close to Solskjaer say he has the support of Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, but it is unclear whether he has the backing of the club’s owners, the Glazer family, and Ratcliffe. However, Manchester United insists that no one on the board questions Wilcox’s recommendation to appoint Carrick, and this decision is based on technical considerations. Even Sir Alex Ferguson supports Carrick’s appointment.
Manchester United’s top management noted that during Carrick’s time coaching Middlesbrough, he successfully transitioned the team from the previous three-defender system used by Chris Wilder back to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Additionally, most of the specific coaching duties during Solskjaer’s tenure at Manchester United were handled by Carrick and Kieran McKenna, who were his assistants at the time.

However, the timing of Ratcliffe’s two managerial changes since acquiring the club has sparked huge controversy, causing his reputation to plummet. Manchester United fans equate him with the Glazer family, considering both to be the main culprits harming the club and believe they should both be removed.
