MU dismisses Amorim, Ten Hag makes a surprising move

Coach Erik ten Hag has officially been named Technical Director of a team in the Netherlands' top league.

Erik ten Hag has been announced to return to the Netherlands to take on the role of Technical Director at FC Twente. Ten Hag is expected to join the club starting February 1st, before officially succeeding Jan Streuer, who will retire after the next season. He has signed a contract lasting until summer 2028.

In an official statement, Ten Hag expressed his heartfelt emotions about returning to the club he has long been connected with since childhood: “It’s wonderful and very special to come back to FC Twente, where I have been a fan at Het Diekman stadium since I was a child. Both my playing and coaching careers began here. With my experience in youth development, team building, and fostering a high-performance sports culture, I aim to work alongside the Supervisory Board, management, and staff to strengthen FC Twente’s professional foundation, ensuring sustainable growth and maximizing the club’s potential as a leading team in the region.”

Ten Hag began his coaching career leading Bayern Munich’s youth squads before making a significant impact at Ajax between 2017 and 2022. In Amsterdam, he helped the club dominate domestically with three Eredivisie titles and guided Ajax to the 2018/19 Champions League semifinals, a remarkable achievement across Europe.

In 2022, the Dutch coach took over as manager of Man Utd and quickly secured the English League Cup in 2023, followed by an FA Cup victory the next season to complete a domestic double. However, a prolonged dip in form early in the recent season led to his departure from Old Trafford in October 2024.

Notably, Ruben Amorim, Ten Hag’s immediate successor, was recently dismissed after a poor run of results and disagreements with the "Red Devils" leadership.

Last May, Ten Hag was appointed head coach at Leverkusen, replacing Xabi Alonso. However, his tenure lasted only four months due to conflicts with the club’s management at Bay Arena.
