Former renowned striker Alan Shearer recently shared his thoughts and predictions about the upcoming clash between Leeds and MU in the 20th round of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
After a 1-1 draw at home against Wolves, MU currently sits 6th in the Premier League standings after the first 19 rounds. MU is still competing for a Top 4 spot, but dropping points against struggling teams has reduced their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League under Ruben Amorim’s management.
In the first match of the new year 2026, MU will visit Leeds United’s home ground , providing both clubs an opportunity to gain points and improve their rankings. Leeds has maintained a 7-point cushion above the Premier League relegation zone thanks to a 6-match unbeaten streak, earning 10 points out of a possible 18.
In their latest game, Leeds held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield, while scoring 10 goals in their last 3 home matches at Elland Road. Speaking about the upcoming Leeds vs MU match, former striker Alan Shearer predicted the result: "Looking at Leeds’ resurgence, I expect them to win at home. Elland Road is always a fantastic stadium, and with the rivalry between the two fanbases, the match promises to be thrilling. Given their current form and Calvert-Lewin starting, I believe Leeds will overcome MU.
I must say, I’m not convinced everything is right at MU; Amorim sometimes puzzles me, especially his return to a three-defender formation after beating Newcastle. I think Leeds has better chances of winning than MU in the upcoming encounter.”
On his side, coach Ruben Amorim also reminded MU’s stars to stay alert against Leeds: "I’ve heard this is a big derby with a proud history and deep rivalry. But every Premier League match is tough for us. I know this game means a lot to the fans, but MU must go there and try to win."
This will be Amorim’s first experience with the "War of the Roses" derby. Previously, the Portuguese manager went through intense Lisbon derbies while coaching Sporting Lisbon. However, he admitted there are cultural differences:
"The noise will be huge. That’s for sure, but each player must focus on playing. It’s hard to compare cultures, histories, or different derbies. It’s a battle of 11 against 11, and MU will have to fight to get what they want."
