Farce! Manchester United's rising star changes his mind and will no longer push for a transfer in the winter window, but still refuses to renew contract amid conflict with Amrabat.

The Sun reports that 20-year-old Manchester United youth prospect Kobe Meno is said to have changed his mind and might stay at the club rather than leaving in the January transfer window. Although he has struggled under Ruben Amrabat’s coaching for more than a year, the England international has not entirely abandoned his career with the Red Devils.

The Premier League’s first half is over, but Meno has yet to start in any league game. Recently, he had the best chance when captain Bruno Fernandes was sidelined due to a rare injury, and Casemiro was suspended after accumulating five yellow cards, leaving a gap in midfield. However, Meno himself suffered a calf injury and missed the last three matches, losing this opportunity.

Insiders confirmed that tensions between Meno and coach Amrabat worsened early December when Meno’s half-brother Jordan wore a T-shirt at Old Trafford pressuring Manchester United. In Amrabat’s 61 matches in charge, Meno has only started 16 times. His last start was back in August last year during the League Cup third round against League Two side Grimsby, where he did not play the full match and the team was surprisingly eliminated in a penalty shootout.

However, despite the conflict with Amrabat, Meno still sees a glimmer of hope for reviving his career at the Red Devils. This is partly because the club still believes in him; last summer, Manchester United rejected a loan request for Meno, considering the academy talent as part of their future plans. Amrabat’s potential future dismissal is also something Meno hopes for.

Meno’s injuries, Bruno Fernandes’ absence, and the club’s difficulties in signing new midfielders have all reduced the likelihood of Meno leaving mid-season. Although many clubs, especially Serie A’s Napoli, are interested, if Manchester United refuses to let him go, both Meno and the other teams must accept the reality.

However, club reporter Samuel Luckhurst revealed that, just like a year ago, Meno refuses to lower his wage demands to renew his contract with Manchester United. His current deal runs until 2027, with an automatic one-year extension clause. That contract was signed when Meno was 17, with a weekly wage of £50,000. His agent once demanded £200,000 per week, causing negotiations to stall.

Regarding Meno’s possible return for the first match of 2026 against Leeds United, Amrabat said it’s still uncertain. The Manchester United coach stated: "I don’t know yet, I need to check first. I won’t risk anyone playing and then being out for one or two months. So we will try to find a solution and see how things develop."

Amrabat has already expressed acceptance of Meno staying with the team to fight for his place. Whether Meno might leave on loan by the end of January could depend on tactical adjustments providing him more chances and whether the Red Devils bring in a new midfielder during the winter window.

If Bruno Fernandes returns quickly and Manchester United signs a new recruit, Meno will still face tough competition for playing time in the second half of the season. He would be reluctant to risk missing the upcoming summer World Cup in North America by staying at Old Trafford waiting for uncertain opportunities.

Similar dramas like Meno’s have occurred multiple times at Manchester United over the past decade. The club often hesitates to take decisive action, holding onto young talented players. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are two prominent examples.
