English coach John Herdman is expected to be appointed by PSSI as the head coach of Indonesia’s national team on a two-year deal, targeting success in the 2026 AFF Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup.
The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) is preparing to name English coach John Herdman as the new head coach of the Indonesian national team with a two-year contract and an option to extend until 2029. The English strategist gained fame by leading Canada to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and will also take on the role of head coach for Indonesia’s U23 team.
According to local media, PSSI conducted a thorough selection process for the head coach position, including Liverpool assistant coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst among the candidates. However, Herdman is highly regarded for his international experience, modern tactical thinking, and ability to develop young players.
The year 2026 promises to be a crucial milestone for Indonesian football, as Herdman will face a packed schedule across multiple competitions. It begins with FIFA Days from March 23 to 31, seen as the first opportunity to experiment with the squad and establish a playing style. Then, the June FIFA Matchday will allow Herdman to further refine tactics and assess the key players’ capabilities.
In particular, the 2026 AFF Cup, held from July 25 to August 26, is regarded as the primary target. PSSI places high hopes on achieving their first-ever title after Indonesia has participated 15 times but only finished as runners-up six times. The FIFA Matchdays in September, October, and November will close out 2026, serving as preparation for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
Before coming to Indonesia, Herdman coached Toronto FC in MLS, recording 46 matches (17 wins, 4 draws, 25 losses). He is expected to bring a fresh energy, especially in tactical approach and competitive mentality, areas where the Indonesian team has lacked in recent years.
