John Herdman's winning rate surpasses that of Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert before each of these three managers led the Indonesian national squad, according to Transfermarkt data.
According to Bola, John Herdman is reported to have had interviews with representatives from the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), who are currently in Europe searching for a new head coach for the Indonesian national team.
Throughout his coaching career, the English manager born in 1975 has overseen a total of 108 matches, including with Canada’s national teams, Canada U23, and Toronto FC in the Canadian championship. Specifically, John Herdman achieved 54 wins, 13 draws, and 41 losses. His winning percentage stands at 50%, with an average of 1.62 points per game, a figure considered quite impressive at the national team level.
By comparison, coach Shin Tae-yong had managed a total of 251 matches before officially taking over Indonesia’s national team for the 2020–2025 period. He previously worked at Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (2008–2010) and South Korea’s national teams at senior, U23, and U20 levels from 2014 to 2018. Despite managing more than twice the number of matches as John Herdman, Shin Tae-yong’s winning rate was 42.23%, significantly lower than the English candidate’s.
Meanwhile, Patrick Kluivert holds a winning percentage of 46.25%, higher than Shin Tae-yong but still below John Herdman. The former Dutch star coached FC Twente II (2011–2013), Curacao’s national team (2015–2016 and 2021), and Adana Demirspor in 2023. Overall, Kluivert recorded 37 wins in his coaching career. However, it’s worth noting that 25 of those victories came during his tenure at FC Twente II, a youth team competing in the U21 Dutch leagues.
According to multiple sources, John Herdman is likely to be announced soon as the head coach of both Indonesia’s senior and U23 national teams. The 50-year-old coach is expected to sign a two-year contract with an option to extend until 2029.
Canadian media, specifically Waking the Red, revealed that John Herdman will earn about 40,000 USD per month (equivalent to approximately 667 million VND). Thus, over two years, his total earnings could reach 960,000 USD, roughly 16 billion VND, while managing Indonesia’s senior and U23 teams.
