MU considers rehiring the coach they previously dismissed if Ruben Amorim loses his job

MU shocks by focusing on a manager they had previously dismissed as a contingency plan should Ruben Amorim be unable to turn things around at Old Trafford.

The recent 1-1 draw against Wolves not only heightened tensions at Old Trafford but also marked a notable milestone in the Premier League: Wolves earned a point, ending an 11-match losing streak in the competition. This result frustrated Gary Neville and raised questions about some of Amorim’s personnel choices and tactical approach.

Pressure on Amorim is mounting as the Red Devils continue to display inconsistent performances.

Amorim is racing to bring MU back into the European qualification spots, amid the club’s ongoing struggles in the upper half of the table. The Portuguese manager took charge in November 2024, stepping in mid-season after Erik ten Hag was sacked. Notably, Amorim initially preferred to accept the role only at the end of the 2024/25 season, but MU reportedly issued an ultimatum of “now or never,” forcing him to sign immediately.

At that time, The Sun revealed MU had considered reappointing Solskjaer on an interim basis before finalizing Amorim, and this option is now being revisited as a potential fallback if things deteriorate. According to sources, Solskjaer is viewed as a short-term stabilizer due to his familiarity with the club’s culture and his experience managing MU both temporarily and permanently.

Solskjaer had a successful spell when he returned to Old Trafford as interim manager before earning a long-term contract. However, he was dismissed by MU in November 2021. Afterwards, the Norwegian coach resumed his career by taking over Besiktas in January but was released by the Turkish club in August.

Solskjaer once enjoyed a relatively successful tenure with MU.

Importantly, Solskjaer has openly left the door open for a return to MU. In an interview with VG (Norway) in September 2024, he said: “If my family asked, I would say ‘yes’ every day of the week. I think it’s not right to comment on others’ jobs, but I would say ‘yes’.”

Earlier, Solskjaer also acknowledged his special emotional connection with MU: “I cried twice growing up. The first time was after the testimonial match. The second was a year and a half ago when I had to leave. Manchester United has something that makes you feel that way.”

While Amorim’s future is under scrutiny, the mention of Solskjaer’s name indicates Old Trafford is preparing various scenarios, at least in rumors, should the Portuguese manager’s battle to keep his position intensify.
