Manchester United is at a major crossroads as the leadership starts considering scenarios to succeed Ruben Amorim in 2026, given the evident loss of faith in the Portuguese coach.
Ruben Amorim’s era at Old Trafford began with high hopes, but by the end of 2025, the outlook has grown increasingly bleak. The 1-1 draw against bottom-ranked Wolves at home was seen as the last straw, exposing the long-standing issues within Manchester United.
A lack of sharpness in play, poor game control against supposedly weaker opponents, and especially the offensive stagnation have all intensified the pressure on Amorim.
After that match, the Portuguese coach remained steadfast in his 3-4-3 philosophy despite mounting criticism. He candidly stated that changing the system due to public pressure would be the most dangerous move, and emphasized:
“Abandoning my principles would truly be the end. Today we lacked coherence and one-on-one duels, but I understand why that happened.” However, these explanations no longer suffice to ease the disappointment of fans and experts alike.
Initially, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS group were willing to be patient, viewing Amorim as the cornerstone of a long-term rebuild. Yet, the harsh reality of the Premier League is shaking that stance.
Manchester United has won only 8 out of 19 matches, drew with bottom-placed Wolves, and repeatedly dropped points against weaker teams. The gap to the Champions League spots is widening, while the attack shows a clear lack of creativity despite having quality players.
According to close sources, Man United’s board has quietly prepared contingency plans for the head coach role starting in 2026. Although publicly Amorim is still supported, serious discussions have begun behind the scenes. The leading candidate now is Oliver Glasner, the coach impressing strongly at Crystal Palace.
The figures reveal a stark contrast. In 2025, Glasner holds about a 50% win rate, significantly higher than Amorim’s just over 34%. Under Glasner, Palace scores more goals, concedes fewer, and notably shows resilience in big matches.
His success in guiding Palace to win the FA Cup and Community Shield, defeating Manchester City and Liverpool respectively, further strengthens Glasner’s standing with the Old Trafford owners.
Of course, Man United is not the only club interested in Glasner. Chelsea is also closely monitoring the Austrian coach, making the competition more complex. Nevertheless, with INEOS’s patience running thin and a cautious approach to the January transfer window, the likelihood of Man United parting ways with Amorim after 2025 is becoming more realistic.
If this happens, Old Trafford is likely to enter a new chapter in 2026, with Oliver Glasner seen as the practical solution to revive the Red Devils’ ambitions.
