Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville expressed frustration and disappointment with Ruben Amorim's tactics after seeing his old club held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-placed Wolves at Old Trafford.
In the 19th round of the Premier League, Manchester United shocked everyone by allowing Wolverhampton to draw 1-1 at Old Trafford. This result left former captain Gary Neville visibly disappointed, especially regarding the puzzling tactical adjustments made by Ruben Amorim.
With Bruno Fernandes sidelined due to injury and Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo away at AFCON, the 40-year-old coach abandoned the effective 4-2-3-1 formation to revert to his familiar 3-4-3 system.
This change, along with Joshua Zirkzee starting instead of Mason Mount at Old Trafford, caused significant disruption in player positions on the field.
Speaking about Amorim once again "shuffling" everything just when things were settling down, Gary Neville expressed confusion: "Everything strangely seemed to deteriorate. I have followed Manchester United’s matches over the past six weeks closely to understand the most effective and suitable way for this team to operate at any given time.
I was genuinely surprised by what happened between MU and Wolves. Zirkzee was placed on the right wing and had to constantly drop back to support Dalot, while Ayden Heaven played as a right-sided center-back and Dorgu was shifted to the left flank—an area where he hasn’t performed as well compared to his recent impressive displays on the right side."
Gary Neville believes forcing players into a 3-4-3 formation was a mistake, regardless of the outcome: "When switching to a four-defender setup, MU performed much better in recent matches, but today, Amorim reverted to his old habits. It was unfortunate that this change almost cost MU a defeat against a struggling Wolves side.
Clearly, MU was lucky to avoid defeat against a Wolves team facing difficulties, but that doesn’t mean this system is the right one to continue with, as the reality on the pitch showed otherwise."
This result also cost MU the chance to break into the Premier League’s top four. Currently, the Red Devils sit 6th with 30 points, just 2 points behind the top four.
