Greenwood is honored to be included in the 2026 MBE award list for contributions to football.
Alex Greenwood has been awarded the MBE in the 2026 Honours List for her contributions to football. Former Manchester United star from the 2018/19 season She was part of the England team that successfully defended their European Championship title last summer by defeating Spain in a penalty shootout in the Euro 2025 final.
That achievement made the Lionesses the first England team to retain a championship title since 2022 and to win a major tournament outside the UK, both firsts for any England men's or women's team.
Greenwood started every match for the England women's team on their path to victory in Switzerland and successfully converted a penalty in the decisive shootout against La Roja, the reigning world champions.
At club level, she has consistently played a crucial role in driving Manchester City forward, delivering remarkably steady performances after recovering in time to prove her fitness ahead of Euro 2025.
Greenwood’s return in the final weeks before the Christmas break was also a major boost for Manchester City, who finished 2025 at the top of the WSL table following an impressive 10-match winning streak.
These contributions earned Greenwood a place on the 2026 New Year Honours List. Other England players such as Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, and Ella Toone were also awarded MBEs. England captain Leah Williamson received a CBE, while coach Sarina Wiegman was honored with the title of Dame.
The MBE stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire – a prestigious British honor awarded by the monarch to recognize outstanding contributions to society.
Joining Manchester City from the top French club OL Lyon in 2020, Greenwood has made 154 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, winning the FA Cup and League Cup during that time.
She has also been selected three times for the PFA WSL Team of the Year in the 2021/22, 2022/23, and 2023/24 seasons.
Taking over the captain’s armband in 2024 after club legend Steph Houghton retired, Greenwood signed a new contract in November, committing her future to Manchester City until the summer of 2027.
