Conte’s Napoli were the reigning Serie A champions, but his side concentrated on a single competition and had a dismal Champions League run. While Inter’s 2025 was very painful, this Nerazzurri team remains the final symbol of the fading Serie A!
In the 17th round of Serie A, Inter defeated Atalanta 1-0 on the road, closing out their 2025 campaign with a hard-fought win. Looking back at 2025, it was a heartbreaking year for Nerazzurri fans. At the start of the year, Inter lost the Italian Super Cup 3-2 to city rivals AC Milan in a last-minute heartbreak; in April, they were again eliminated by AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semifinals; and in last season’s Serie A title race, Inter finished with 81 points, just one behind Napoli’s 82, narrowly missing out on the championship.
In European competitions, Inter advanced impressively to the Champions League final but suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, crowning a new champion. In this summer’s Club World Cup, Inter was shockingly knocked out in the round of 16 by Brazilian side Fluminense!
This season, Inter currently leads Serie A by 1 point, but was eliminated from the Italian Super Cup by Bologna!
With Serie A now a retirement home for disgruntled Premier League stars and veterans from other major leagues, and without Simone Inzaghi coaching Inter, it may be a long time before an Italian club reaches the Champions League final again. Serie A is also the only one among the big five leagues without a player valued over €100 million—while Ligue 1 now has three such players—indicating Serie A’s gradual decline to the bottom of the top five leagues. Inter, reaching the Champions League final twice in three years, may well be Serie A’s last remaining prestige!
