At the pre-match press conference before MU's game against Wolves, coach Ruben Amorim confirmed that Bruno Fernandes definitely cannot play due to a hamstring injury sustained in the 21-12 defeat to Aston Villa.
Initially, the Red Devils' captain was expected to be sidelined for about a month, but his encouraging recovery progress leaves open the possibility of an earlier comeback. Still, Amorim stressed he would not take any risks: "There is no chance Bruno will play against Wolves. Absolutely no chance."
What particularly impressed Amorim was not Fernandes' recovery speed but his leadership role even when he couldn’t play. During his injury period, the 31-year-old midfielder consistently showed up at Carrington, observing training sessions, engaging in conversations, giving advice, and energizing younger teammates. Amorim shared with a touch of humor: "He’s always there, even after finishing treatment, he stays to watch the others train. I don’t know if he wants my job, but he truly is a leader."

The MU head coach emphasized that Fernandes is not the type to stay silent when sidelined. "He can’t be someone who says nothing if he’s not playing. Bruno always speaks up, lives every match. That’s why he’s the captain," Amorim said. He also openly admitted that Fernandes sometimes shows excessive gestures on the pitch, but in return, he brings countless positive values in spirit, responsibility, and team cohesion in the dressing room—things outsiders rarely perceive.
Not only Fernandes, but MU’s injury list ahead of the Wolves game is also quite extensive. Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs De Ligt, and Harry Maguire are all not ready to return. Mainoo is expected to rejoin first-team training within the next few days, but his chances of playing immediately are very low. De Ligt and Maguire have similar problems, and Amorim admitted he does not expect any miracles in terms of personnel for this match.
The only uncertain case is Mason Mount, who had to leave the field at halftime during the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle. "I don’t know how Mase will be for this game," Amorim said. If Mount doesn’t recover in time, MU could be missing up to eight players, especially as Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo are currently participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Although Wolves are currently at the bottom of the table, Amorim remains cautious. He pointed out Wolves nearly held Arsenal to a draw to emphasize that there are no easy matches in the Premier League. "They have problems, we have problems, but there’s no excuse. We need to win," Amorim stated.
