Christian Eriksen has rarely spoken about his former club Manchester United, with his most notable comments directed at Ruben Amorim.
During his 14 months managing Manchester United, Ruben Amorim frequently became the media focus due to numerous provocative statements in press conferences and interviews.
Throughout his tenure as United’s coach, Amorim constantly dealt with intense pressure due to his style and philosophy clashing with the club’s culture. He suffered 21 defeats in 61 matches across all competitions.
Last season, Manchester United finished only 15th and lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The controversy peaked in January amid a poor run of form when Amorim declared:“We might be the worst team in Manchester United’s history.”.
Not only did fans and experts oppose this, but even the players in the locker room were unhappy with Amorim publicly criticizing the team in such a manner.
Christian Eriksen, who appeared 35 times in the 2024/25 season, bluntly stated that Amorim’s comments “did not help the club.”
Speaking to ESPN, Eriksen said: “That doesn’t help at all. It really doesn’t support the players. Some things should be kept within the team; saying them publicly is unwise because it adds pressure and brings more criticism to players who are already giving their all.”.
“I don’t think it helped. Whether it was right or wrong is another matter, but for us, it felt like, ‘Oh great, another headline.’”” Eriksen added.
After the 2024/25 season, Eriksen was not offered a contract extension by United and left the club as a free agent. In his final match for the Red Devils against Aston Villa, he scored a penalty in a 2–0 victory, closing his time at Old Trafford on a high note.
Following his departure from Manchester United, Eriksen joined VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal with an option for an additional year. The former Tottenham and Brentford midfielder has made 13 appearances for the Bundesliga side so far.
