It has been reported that Manchester United would resort to signing Ruben Neves from Al Hilal Riyadh only under unavoidable circumstances, viewing him as the ultimate fallback option. Insider information indicates that Neves was considered for the midfield role in January, yet he was not a primary target.

Manchester United has indeed maintained regular communication with Ruben Neves’ agent, gaining insight into the player’s current situation and related details. Neves’ agent is the renowned Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes. They have declined a new contract offer from Al Hilal, with his existing deal set to expire in June 2026.
Al Hilal signed Neves from Premier League club Wolves in the summer of 2023 for £47 million. In January, they valued the Portuguese international at £18 million and are even willing to accept a lower fee.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated that Manchester United has not conducted any transfer negotiations with Al Hilal, and their contact with Mendes is just routine communication. So far, no substantive talks have taken place between the parties.
Romano mentioned that Manchester United’s discussions with Mendes were not limited to Neves; players like PSG winger Barcola, also represented by Mendes, are rumored to be of interest to the Red Devils.
Romano clarified: "I want to make it clear: I have not posted any news about Ruben Neves on my social media because there are currently no ongoing negotiations, offers, or discussions regarding him. Manchester United has contacted Neves’ agent, but they have not truly entered talks with Neves or Al Hilal to finalize a deal. So at this moment, there is no progress whatsoever."

Regarding the discussions between Manchester United and Mendes, Romano said: "They talked about several players, not just Neves; they discussed opportunities, ideas, possibilities, and talent-related matters. Neves is represented by one of football’s most influential agents (Mendes). Such interactions are completely normal, but so far, no changes have occurred."
Neves’ strength lies in his six years at Wolves, with 219 Premier League appearances, showing his wealth of experience. However, while his transfer fee is modest, his wages are strikingly high—he earns over £400,000 per week in Saudi Arabia. Manchester United demands a significant salary cut, Neves wants £200,000 per week, but United is only willing to offer around £150,000, comparable to Cunha and Mbemo.
Additionally, Neves will turn 29 in March next year, leading some to question whether he can make an immediate impact returning to the Premier League after two years in Saudi Arabia. He has been in talks with many European clubs, including Premier League sides Tottenham and Newcastle. Nuno Santo, who coached him at Porto and Wolves, also hopes to bring him to West Ham. Neves has attracted interest from clubs in Italy, Spain, Germany, and his homeland Portugal.
Manchester United’s ideal plan is to sign Neves on a free transfer next summer. By then, most or even all of the current midfielders may leave, including 33-year-old veteran Casemiro, whose contract expires soon, academy graduate Kobe Meno who wants to leave, and Amorin’s close ally Ugarte.
According to "Fotomac," Turkish Super Lig leaders Galatasaray plan to make a tentative offer for Ugarte in January. The Turks want to propose a loan deal with a buyout clause, but the transfer fee involved is only €25 million! Manchester United paid €60 million to acquire Ugarte, so they definitely will not accept this. French club Lyon and Italian side Napoli have also shown strong interest in similar loan-to-buy deals.

If the current midfielders depart and Neves is willing to join Manchester United on a free transfer, it would be an excellent choice, refreshing the team’s midfield with a strong lineup including Elliott Anderson, Adam Walton or Bareraba alongside Neves.
