Gyokeres turns out to be no better than Jesus or Havertz.

Viktor Gyokeres has once more attracted focus, yet not because of goals or decisive moments, but because of a noticeably uninspiring display.

Gyokeres was brought to Emirates with the hope of being the "final piece" in Mikel Arteta's attacking lineup. After several seasons struggling to solve the striker puzzle, Arsenal believed they had found the answer in the forward who once exploded spectacularly at Sporting. However, the reality in the Premier League reveals a harsh truth: Gyokeres has yet to adapt and is even showing clear signs of declining confidence.

The match against Brighton was the clearest example. Right in the first minute, Gyokeres had a golden chance to open the scoring. The ball bounced perfectly to his feet, the opposing goalkeeper rushed out leaving the goal almost empty. For any top striker, this would be a straightforward chance. But Gyokeres hesitated, struck the ball weakly, and directed it straight to Bart Verbruggen. This miss not only cost Arsenal an early opportunity to control the game but also reflected the unstable mental state of the team's most anticipated striker.

Former star Paul Merson did not hide his disappointment when commenting on this moment. He described it as "the simplest chance possible," a "daily bread" for a striker, and Gyokeres’s failure to capitalize indicated serious confidence issues. It's hard to argue against this view, especially since what followed was even worse.

Gyokeres’s statistics in the Brighton game paint a bleak picture. He only took 2 shots, none on target. Over more than an hour on the pitch, he completed just 6 passes, half of which were inaccurate.

Gyokeres is increasingly disappointing at Arsenal.

More worryingly, Gyokeres barely made an impact on how Arsenal operated their play. He was easily marked, rarely created space for teammates, and was almost "invisible" during attacking combinations. This is not an isolated issue from one match but a recurring theme since the start of the season.

This has led many to question: Is Gyokeres truly an upgrade over Gabriel Jesus or Kai Havertz? The current reality leans heavily towards "no." The limitations Arsenal faced with Jesus and Havertz—unstable finishing and minimal influence inside the box—still persist, just under a different name. Gyokeres has neither solved the old problems nor introduced a new approach to the attack.

The disappointment grows even greater when considering the initial expectations for Gyokeres. At Sporting, he was an unstoppable goal-scoring machine, a strong, cold, and efficient striker. But the Premier League is clearly a much tougher environment, where Gyokeres has yet to find a way to showcase the qualities that once made him famous.

With Havertz returning to training and Jesus remaining a familiar option, Gyokeres’s place in the starting lineup is no longer guaranteed.
