Revealing the salary of the new head coach of Indonesia’s national team, how many times higher is it than Kim Sang Sik’s?

Indonesian media reports that Coach John Herdman will earn approximately 40,000 USD per month while leading the national team.

The former head coach of the Canadian national team, John Herdmanhas officially been appointed by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) as the head coach of the Indonesia national team, under a two-year contract with an option to extend for another two years.

This 50-year-old strategist made a strong impression by leading Canada’s men’s team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, making him one of the most experienced coaches to join Southeast Asian football in recent years. According to sources from Indonesian press, Herdman will receive a salary of about 40,000 USD per month, equivalent to 1.05 billion Vietnamese dong.

This salary is twice as much as what Coach Kim Sang Sik is currently earning while leading Vietnamese football (around 20,000 USD per month).

The contract between Herdman and PSSI initially runs until 2027, with an option to extend until 2030. With this agreement, he is expected to bring long-term stability to the Indonesian team amid the country’s ambition to rise in Asian football.

John Herdman will replace Coach Patrick Kluivertand simultaneously take charge of both the senior national team and the Indonesia U23 squad. Granting one coach responsibility for both levels is seen as a strategic move by PSSI to bridge the gap between youth development and the senior team, building a sustainable development system.

According to the plan, Herdman is likely to remain in position at least until the tenure of PSSI President Erick Thohir ends in 2027. In the 2026 action plan, he will focus on integrating under-23 players into the national team and preparing the squad for the 2027 Asian Cup—an event where Indonesia hopes to make a breakthrough.

Although becoming one of the highest-paid coaches in Southeast Asia, Herdman’s remuneration is still not a record. Previously, Coach Park Hang Seo earned 55,000 USD per month while leading Vietnam. Meanwhile, former Indonesia head coach Shin Tae Yong reportedly earned about 1.5 million USD annually. Patrick Kluivert’s contract was said to be worth up to 100,000 USD per month.
