Coach Enzo Maresca openly addressed Cole Palmer’s dissatisfaction after the midfielder was substituted in Chelsea’s 1-2 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night.
Chelsea approached the game with the goal of regaining victory following a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in the previous round. The home team had a promising start with Joao Pedro scoring the opening goal in the first half. However, in the second half, Aston Villa reversed the situation thanks to a double from striker Ollie Watkins, causing Chelsea to suffer a disappointing loss in their first match after the Christmas break.
Coach Maresca started Cole Palmer in this match but chose to substitute the England international in the 72nd minute when the score was 1-1. Estevao Willian came on for Palmer. Twelve minutes later, Aston Villa scored the decisive goal, again by Watkins.
