Unai Emery’s accurate personnel adjustments helped Aston Villa stage an emotional comeback at Chelsea, maintaining their fight for the Premier League title alongside Arsenal and Man City.
In the 18th round of the Premier League, Chelsea hosted Aston Villa. A surprise came from the starting lineup when Unai Emery decided to bench Ollie Watkins and gave Malen the starting spot. Chelsea thus began dominantly, controlling the match and constantly pressuring the visitors’ half.
However, Aston Villa displayed their characteristic toughness through a solid defensive game. It was only in the 18th minute that Chelsea created their first significant chance, but Enzo failed to convert. Shortly after, Pedro missed another opportunity, failing to finish from Neto’s good pass.
As the first half was winding down, just when it seemed the home team would remain goalless, a sudden turning point came in the 37th minute. From a corner by James, goalkeeper Martinez’s vision was blocked and the ball accidentally deflected off Pedro into the net, giving Chelsea a temporary 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.
