Coach Ruben Amorim revealed that adopting a four-man defense was the crucial factor enabling MU to defeat Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day, while also admitting this was a tactical change aimed at increasing threats against the opposition.
Although MU held just 33% possession at Old Trafford, they secured all 3 points thanks to Patrick Dorgu’s spectacular left-foot volley in the first half. Interestingly, the Danish defender was pushed higher on the right wing in the new setup, a rare adjustment during Amorim’s tenure.
Speaking after the match, the Portuguese coach admitted that a four-man defense was the most suitable approach to enhance attacking options and ball control. “In the first half, it was the only way for us to create more danger, with more players occupying midfield. Pushing Dorgu forward gave him greater freedom and improved his performance,” Amorim said.
Amorim has changed his tactics
He also praised Manuel Ugarte for his steady midfield display and explained the decision to introduce Jack Fletcher, son of former star Darren Fletcher, in the second half. Amorim highlighted the philosophy of giving youth chances but stressed that winning remains the highest priority.
“Sometimes you have to select the best players to achieve results,” Amorim commented, adding a bit of humor about common press conference topics: “Clean sheets, a back four, Kobbie Mainoo’s injury, maybe we don’t need another press conference. Now we can go home and enjoy Boxing Day.”
This win is even more notable considering that just months ago, Amorim declared, “not even the Pope could convince me to change the formation.” However, given Man United have conceded 28 goals this season and face intense public scrutiny, the tactical change was ultimately implemented.
The 3 points over Newcastle moved Man United up to fifth place, level on points with Chelsea. In the upcoming round, the “Red Devils” will host Wolverhampton at Old Trafford.
