The 1-5 defeat against Thailand has seriously hindered Vietnam's U16 futsal team's chances of reaching the final in the 2025 Southeast Asian U16 Futsal tournament.
During the third round of matches at the 2025 Southeast Asian U16 Futsal Championship, the Vietnam U16 futsal team faced a tough battle against their long-time rival, Thailand U16. Despite their best efforts, the young players had to accept a 1-5 loss against a technically superior and opportunistic opponent.
The match started with a very difficult scenario for Vietnam U16. Within the first minute, while many fans were still settling in, Puno Huangsilipkhun shocked everyone by scoring the opening goal for Thailand. This early setback significantly affected the Vietnamese players’ mindset. By the 9th minute, the gap doubled when Bunrit Phetthiam scored for the Golden Kingdom team.
In the second half, Vietnam U16 pushed forward aggressively to find an equalizer, but this left gaps in defense. At the 30th and 32nd minutes, Achita Srijui and Natthaphong Phothikonapat scored the third and fourth goals for Thailand, crushing any hopes of a comeback for the Vietnamese squad.
Vietnam U16’s late efforts were finally rewarded in the 39th minute with a consolation goal by Đỗ Mạnh Tiến. However, the brief joy was quickly extinguished just one minute later (40th minute) when Bunrit Phetchathiam completed his brace, sealing a devastating 5-1 victory for Thailand U16.
This defeat taught valuable lessons to the young Vietnamese players about maintaining focus from the very start and showing resilience when facing top regional opponents.
Thus, after three rounds, Vietnam’s U16 futsal team currently ranks third with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss), trailing Indonesia by 3 points and Thailand by 5 points. Therefore, even if they win against Brunei in the final match, the chance for Vietnam U16 futsal to move up to second place and qualify for the final remains very slim.
