The news that Vietnam has officially started building the Trống Đồng Stadium, described as the largest stadium globally with seating for 135,000, rapidly triggered strong discussions within the Thai fan community.
According to official statements, the Trống Đồng Stadium is part of the Olympic Sports City complex invested by Vingroup, with a total capital of up to 925 trillion VND, covering an area of more than 9,000 hectares in the suburban area of Hanoi. The project officially broke ground on December 19 and is expected to be completed by August 2028..
Immediately after this information was circulated on Southeast Asian forums and social media, many Thai fans left mixed comments ranging from sarcasm and skepticism to curiosity and even excitement.
One Thai user sarcastically commented: “It’s probably just to say they beat Thailand. Inside the stadium, they’ll likely hang a sign saying ‘Beat Thailand 5-1.’”
However, quite a few Thai opinions expressed doubts about the scale of the investment. One fan bluntly asked: “One million trillion dong for a stadium or is there something else being built? That figure seems excessive.”
On the other hand, many believe the project serves more than just football. One fan suggested: “Just build it, it could also be used for e-sports events.”
Some responses were clearly positive and tourism-oriented. One Thai fan shared: “Once it’s finished, I definitely have to visit Vietnam. There are many attractive tourist spots, especially the cable car routes, which I really like.”
From a professional and technological perspective, the Trống Đồng Stadium is designed to FIFA standards, equipped with the world’s largest retractable roof system, allowing events to be held in any weather conditions. The advanced modular roll-out turf technology enables the entire pitch to be replaced within 6–10 hours, meeting the demands of hosting multiple major events continuously.
Additionally, the stadium features four curved stands forming a 360-degree ring, optimizing sightlines from every seat. The complex also includes four training fields (two covered), a modern VAR center connected to all cameras, a press working area, and conference spaces meeting international standards. Experts say that once completed, Trống Đồng Stadium will be qualified to host top sporting events such as the ASIAD, the Olympics, and even the World Cup in the future—something once considered “luxury” for Vietnamese football.
