According to information from the Vietnam Football Federation, the contract with Coach Mai Đức Chung will last 4 months (until the end of April 2026), during the period when the Vietnam women's national team competes in the 2026 Women's Asian Cup final round.
On December 25, The Vietnam Football Federation announced that Coach Mai Đức Chung will continue to lead the Vietnam women's national team at the 2026 Asian Cup final round. According to VFF’s assessment, given the limited preparation time, Coach Mai Đức Chung – a highly experienced figure with deep knowledge of Vietnamese women's football and significant contributions over the years – is the most suitable candidate to continue leading the team during this crucial phase.
Further details on this matter, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation, Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Vũ, stated that the contract between VFF and Coach Mai Đức Chung will be extended for another 4 months (until the end of April 2026):
"To ensure continuity, VFF has extended Coach Mai Đức Chung’s contract by 4 months to cover the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup final round. VFF has prepared for the period after Coach Mai Đức Chung’s contract ends and will announce official information accordingly. For now, we must thoroughly prepare for the tournament taking place early next year", shared Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Nguyễn Xuân Vũ after the 2025 Annual Congress of the 9th term (2022-2026) on the morning of December 26.
Also according to Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Vũ, the Vietnam Football Federation initially compiled a list of candidates to replace Coach Mai Đức Chung, including Coach Akira Ijiri. However, after consulting with the Japan Football Association, this proposal was deemed unsuitable. According to VFF leadership, careful consideration will be given to the head coach position of the women's national team after the conclusion of the 2026 Asian Cup final round.
As for himself, Head Coach Mai Đức Chung expressed his honor at continuing to receive the trust of the Vietnam Football Federation, affirming that he, along with the coaching staff and players, will fully focus on preparations and strive to perform at their best in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup final round.
