Last Sunday’s 1-2 defeat to Juventus was Roma’s sixth loss in 15 Serie A matches. The helplessness pushed coach Gian Piero Gasperini to his limit: the Giallorossi’s offense is too blunt. Their Top 4 dream may be destroyed here.
When Gasperini arrived at the Olimpico, fans hoped for a blazing, destructive attacking machine like the one he built at Atalanta, known as the "Goddess" of goals. But reality has been far harsher. Roma might have a strong defense, high fighting spirit, and impressive pressing, yet their biggest problem lies in scoring goals. With only 17 goals in 16 games and losing 40% of matches played, the impact of an ineffective offense is clear.
The main target of criticism, though not always openly stated in the press, is Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian striker was expected to carry the main goal-scoring responsibility but has had a lackluster season so far (scoring only 2 goals and currently injured). His poor performance in front of goal has caused Roma to drop many crucial points, putting Gasperini in a difficult situation.
Coach Gasperini is fed up with Roma’s “harmless” attack.
Sporting director Frederic Massara admitted he is under pressure from Gasperini, sending a clear message: Roma needs an offensive revolution this winter and cannot wait for miracles from exhausted or unconfident players. The promising idea: Matias Soule on the right wing, Giacomo Raspadori on the left, and Joshua Zirkzee as the central striker. Dovbyk, once a hopeful figure, is now being considered for sale.
Joshua Zirkzee has become the dream of Romanista fans. The Dutch striker is seen as the top target and a perfect fit for Gasperini’s system thanks to his ability to link play, technical skills, and modern tactical thinking shown previously at Bologna. However, this transfer faces a major hurdle because Manchester United will only release him at the end of January, after AFCON players return, to ensure squad depth. This conflicts with Roma’s urgent need for reinforcements to salvage a season going off track.
This is indeed a tough challenge. Roma might have to consider other options to maintain control. The sooner, the better. Otherwise, players ill-suited for the striker role like Dybala or Pellegrini will be forced to fill the gap awkwardly, while even young loan striker Evan Ferguson from Brighton is almost "non-existent." The Irish forward has even gone home for Christmas instead of training with the team, risking heavy punishment, highlighting how drained Roma’s attack has become.
