The goalkeeper played the hero as Arsenal triumphed 8-7 in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Early this morning, Arsenal earned their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a dramatic 8-7 victory on penalties against Crystal Palace, wrapping up a tense and extended match.

In the first half, Arsenal completely dominated with 79% ball possession and launched 12 shots. Noni Madueke might have scored four goals if it weren’t for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Walter Benítez’s heroic saves.

Walter Benítez delivered a stellar performance between the posts.

At the third minute, Madueke’s left-footed shot was weak and went directly to Benítez. Midway through the first half, Madueke’s toe-poked shot towards goal was again pushed away by Benítez.

Three minutes later, Benítez made an excellent double save against Gabriel Jesus’ header—marking the Brazilian’s first start in 345 days—and Madueke’s follow-up shot.

Five minutes before halftime, Benítez once again denied Madueke with a quick reflex save after a shot slipped through several Palace defenders.

As Palace started to gain control and hope for an upset, coach Arteta brought on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, replacing Madueke and former Palace player Eberechi Eze, who had a subdued performance.

It was not until the 80th minute that Arsenal broke through Palace’s defense with their signature corner kick routine. Amid the chaos in front of goal, Lacroix accidentally scored an own goal, putting Arsenal ahead 1-0.
