Coach Mai Đức Chung is expected to say goodbye to the Vietnam women's national team once his contract ends on December 31.
According to multiple sources, Coach Mai Đức Chung has submitted a request to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to step down after the contract between both parties concludes on December 31, 2025. However, the 76-year-old coach has not made a final decision yet and will wait for the upcoming official meeting.
Earlier, Coach Mai Đức Chung shared: "I will step down after this SEA Games regardless of the outcome because over 40 years of coaching and nearly 20 years dedicated to the women's team is enough for me to give my all as the leader. At my age, I still have strength, but the head coach position requires someone younger and more energetic to lead the team forward in the new era."
During nearly three decades devoted to women's football, Coach Mai Đức Chung has left a huge legacy: 8 SEA Games gold medals, the 2019 AFF Cup championship, 4th place at the 2014 Asian Games, 5th place at the 2022 Asian Cup, and qualification for the 2023 World Cup. On September 25, 2025, he was honored with the title of Labor Hero.
Recently at SEA Games 33, the Vietnam women's team narrowly missed the gold medal due to referee errors during the match. Despite not extending their championship streak, Coach Mai Đức Chung’s players left a strong impression with their brave and resilient spirit, reaching the SEA Games final for the fifth consecutive time.
