The news that the Malaysian national team is almost certain to be ruled a 0-3 defeat against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers is sparking a strong wave of reactions from Southeast Asian football fans, especially Indonesian supporters.
According to Seasia Goal, an insider source from the AFC revealed The Malaysian team will be handed 0-3 losses in their matches against Nepal and Vietnam, similar to the sanctions FIFA recently imposed on Malaysia’s three friendly matches. These penalties have been agreed upon in principle and are only awaiting official announcement following the ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Notably, the report confirms that the CAS hearing is not intended to overturn FIFA or AFC’s decisions but solely concerns the appeal against the one-year suspension imposed on the involved players. This means the 0-3 loss ruling against Vietnam is almost certain to remain unchanged.
If the decision is announced as expected, this result will erase Malaysia’s wins against Vietnam and Nepal, completely altering the standings in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying group. Immediately after the news spread, Indonesian fans left numerous emotional comments.
One fan wrote: “This time Vietnamese and Indonesian fans are sharing the same laugh.”
Another opinion bluntly questioned the responsibility of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM): “This is a punishment for the team, but what about the Federation, which is the root cause of the problem? From what I read, FAM was only fined. The team and players have been sanctioned by FIFA and AFC, but what about the Malaysian Federation? Is the law not applied to FAM?”
Many Indonesian fans expressed frustration and demanded harsher penalties: “If they are not banned from playing, then AFC and FIFA are truly insane.”
A brief but sarcastic comment aimed at Vietnam said: “Vietnam is just smiling lightly.”
These reactions show that regional public opinion, especially in Indonesia, is not only concerned about Malaysia’s forfeited results but also raises serious questions about the responsibility and severity of punishments imposed on FAM, the organization accused of being behind the citizenship violations.
Ironically, before the scandal broke out, Malaysia had an outstanding 2025 with a streak of 9 consecutive wins. However, everything quickly reversed when FIFA accused FAM and the Malaysian national team of breaching naturalization regulations, involving seven players in matches against Nepal and Vietnam.
According to Seasia Goal, the AFC will also apply similar sanctions in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, putting Malaysia at risk not only of losing points but also possibly being banned from participating in the next two Asian Cup qualifying cycles (2027 and 2031).
