Thairath praised Vietnam's project to build the world's largest stadium.
Vietnam's sports and construction sectors have recently made a remarkable achievement by starting construction of the Trống Đồng Stadium within the Olympic Sports City complex. The project, with a total investment of 925 trillion VND, quickly attracted attention both domestically and internationally.
Trống Đồng Stadium will have a capacity of 135,000 seats, becoming the largest stadium in the world once completed, featuring the largest retractable roof system on the planet, enabling events to be held regardless of weather conditions. It is expected to be finished by August 2028.
Upon completion, it will surpass North Korea's Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, which holds 114,000 spectators, as the biggest stadium worldwide. Meanwhile, Vietnam's current national stadium, Mỹ Đình Stadium, only accommodates about 40,000 seats.
Witnessing the massive scale of this project, Thairath expressed admiration for Vietnam's vision and ambition in sports. In an article titled "Amazing: An ASEAN Nation Building the World's Largest Stadium", the Thai newspaper stated that Vietnam has a significant opportunity to host major international sports events and become one of the leading sports hubs globally.
Specifically, Thairath wrote: "... This project is carried out to elevate Vietnamese sports and open opportunities to host major international sporting events such as the Asian Games, the Olympics, or the World Cup.
Additionally, the Olympic Sports City is expected to boost economic development and help establish Vietnam as an important global sports center."
Besides the SEA Games, a multi-sport event for Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam has only hosted a few major sports events in Asia such as the 2009 Asian Indoor Games and the 2016 Asian Beach Games.
Therefore, the Trống Đồng Stadium project could open a new chapter for Vietnamese sports in general and Vietnamese football in particular. Not only does Vietnam have the honor to organize continental tournaments like the Asiad or Olympics, the World Cup is also a goal Vietnam aims for to shorten the path to the biggest football festival on earth for its national team.
Not only the senior men's World Cup, but youth and women's World Cup tournaments could also be targeted to showcase Vietnam's organizational scale and leave a mark on regional and international football fans.
