Coach Hansi Flick: 'He saved us from defeat'

Coach Hansi Flick was pleased following Barcelona’s 2-0 win against Villarreal, especially commending goalkeeper Joan García, who he said “rescued the team” with his excellent display.

After the 2-0 win over Villarreal in La Liga’s 17th round, Coach Hansi Flick shared his happiness as Barcelona closed out 2025 at the top of the table, also giving special praise to young goalkeeper Joan García, describing him as the one who “saved the team.”

“This victory is very important. Villarreal is a strong team, fast and well-organized. I’m pleased that the entire squad kept a clean sheet and earned valuable three points,” the German coach began the post-match press conference.

Flick admitted that Barca was not in the best physical condition after an eight-game winning streak, but the players’ fighting spirit made him proud: “Joan García saved us with some fantastic saves. He helped the team keep a clean sheet in a very challenging match. The whole team was tired, but their spirit was incredible. I’m proud of my players.”

The German coach also praised the players’ professional attitude: “I see great spirit, quality, and focus during training sessions. Even when performances were not at their best, I still believed the team would improve because what they show daily is truly impressive.”

Flick confirmed that center-back Andreas Christensen suffered a serious injury, a partial tear of the left knee’s cruciate ligament, while Koundé only had mild cramps and will undergo further checks upon returning to Barcelona. “We have to support Andreas in his recovery. He has been in good form, which is unfortunate. I will discuss with Deco about the squad situation and the possibility of adding players soon,” Flick stated.

At the end of the press conference, Hansi Flick emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and team unity: “We have gone through a challenging year, but the team has always kept a positive attitude. Now it’s time for them to rest and enjoy Christmas with their families. In 2026, we will welcome back Gavi, Olmo, and Ronald Araújo, which will be a major boost for Barca.”
