After a difficult period, Nam Định enters the clash with Bangkok United in Group B of the ASEAN Cup 2025/26 determined to restore the image of the V.League champions. Despite a massive 9-0 win over Eastern AA, coach Jeromino’s team was eliminated in the AFC Champions League Two group stage due to goal difference against Ratchaburi (Thailand), a disappointing outcome.
Leaving the continental competition behind, Nam Định focuses all efforts on the regional tournament. In the V.League, the Nam team is going through a crisis, sitting in 10th place, only 2 points above the relegation zone. Therefore, the ASEAN Cup serves as a lifeline for this disappointing season. A victory over Bangkok United would not only strengthen Nam Định’s position in the group but also boost the entire team’s morale.
In reality, Nam Định’s performance in the ASEAN Cup has been fairly stable so far. They have beaten PKR Svay Rieng and Shan United, currently standing second in the group behind Johor Darul Ta’zim but with one game less played. However, those wins came against lower-rated opponents, so the match against Bangkok United is the true test for the Vietnamese champions.
Meanwhile, Bangkok United has shown a less convincing form. The Thai team started with a heavy 0-4 loss to Johor Darul Ta’zim, followed by a 2-2 draw against Lion City Sailors. Defensive weaknesses and declining form make it hard for Bangkok United to cause an upset at Thiên Trường, where Nam Định always performs with great enthusiasm in front of their home crowd.
