AC Milan has once again shown instability when competing against newly promoted teams in the Serie A this season. The 2-2 draw with Sassuolo at San Siro not only resulted in lost points for the Rossoneri but also extended their string of disappointing results against teams considered weaker, following 2-2 draws with Pisa and a 1-2 defeat to Cremonese.
During the encounter with Sassuolo, Milan were clearly the stronger side, particularly as the visitors missed star Domenico Berardi and adopted a defensive formation. Nonetheless, a moment of carelessness in defense led to an early setback for the home team. From a sloppy throw-in in their own half, Milan lost possession, allowing Sassuolo’s Ismael Koné to exploit the gap and score the opening goal, beating Matteo Gabbia and goalkeeper Mike Maignan with a skillful shot.
After conceding, Milan pushed forward to find an equalizer. Adrien Rabiot had a clear chance after stealing the ball just outside Sassuolo’s penalty area, but goalkeeper Arijanet Muric made a brilliant save. It wasn’t until the 33rd minute that Milan restored parity. Young talent Davide Bartesaghi made his mark by scoring his first Serie A goal, finishing close-range following a sharp cross from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The second half started perfectly for Milan. Just one minute after the break, Bartesaghi completed his brace with a neat finish after a pass from Nkunku, putting the Rossoneri ahead 2-1. However, the home side’s joy was short-lived. Matteo Gabbia’s injury forced him off the pitch, disrupting Milan’s defense and allowing Sassuolo to gradually regain control of the game.
Milan seemed close to sealing the match when they scored twice, but both goals were disallowed due to earlier infringements. Meanwhile, Sassuolo mounted a strong comeback in the latter part of the second half. Tactical attacking substitutions helped the visitors apply constant pressure, forcing Milan to retreat into defense. Their efforts paid off when Armand Laurienté scored the equalizer with a strike similar to Koné’s opening goal.
In the remaining minutes, Sassuolo nearly secured all three points as Laurienté had two more excellent chances, but once he was denied by Maignan and another shot hit the post. This draw means Milan have again dropped points against a newly promoted side.
