Disputes with coach Arne Slot and a drop in performance have placed Mohamed Salah in danger of departing Liverpool this January, with recommendations to join MLS like Son Heung-min.
Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool is becoming more uncertain than ever as former star Chris Waddle advises the Egyptian player to “take inspiration” from Son Heung-min and transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the upcoming January transfer window.
The root cause stems from disagreements between Salah and coach Arne Slot, as the 33-year-old no longer meets the strict tactical demands of the Dutch manager. Being dropped from the Champions League squad and temporarily excluded from the starting lineup has strained their relationship further, although Salah was recently recalled for the match against Brighton.
According to Chris Waddle, Salah is gradually losing his effectiveness due to age and the intense pace of the Premier League. “He no longer has the stamina to both attack and support defense as Slot requires. If he's unhappy, Salah should ask for a January exit, and MLS could be an ideal destination where he will be respected as a major star,” Waddle commented.
The former Newcastle player also cited Son Heung-min, who left Tottenham to join LAFC last summer, as a role model for Salah. MLS is now an attractive destination for big names like Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller, and Salah could become the league's next iconic figure.
Currently, Salah has scored only 5 goals and made 3 assists in 19 matches, his lowest output in several recent seasons. Meanwhile, Liverpool is struggling significantly, sitting mid-table in the Premier League and often lacking offensive breakthroughs.
For now, Salah will join the Egyptian national team to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His future at Anfield is likely to be decided after this tournament. A smooth departure in January could help both parties regain peace after a turbulent period.
