Although initial reports suggested Sesko would recover soon, coach Ruben Amorim recently revealed the disappointing reason behind the delay in the striker’s comeback.
According to Amorim, the 21-year-old forward, a summer signing worth 74 million pounds (equivalent to 98.8 million USD) brought in by Manchester United from RB Leipzig, has suffered food poisoning, pushing back his expected return date. Sesko’s absence is strongly felt, especially as Manchester United is about to lose two key forwards, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, who must participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This situation causes a severe shortage in the “Red Devils” attacking lineup.
Sesko’s inability to return has also added pressure on the remaining forwards such as Joshua Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha. Meanwhile, Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, stated that his client is very eager to make a comeback.
Speaking to the media ahead of the match against Bournemouth in the early hours of December 16, coach Ruben Amorim shared the squad situation at Manchester United: “(Harry) Maguire is unavailable, (Matthijs) De Ligt as well. As for Ben (Sesko), we have to wait. We need to see if he is ready. Ben had a bit of food poisoning, but let’s wait, we still have two training sessions left.”
Earlier this week, Elvis Basanovic, Sesko’s agent, told Slovenian broadcaster Arena Sport that the striker is recovering well: “Benjamin feels very good, the recovery is progressing according to plan. He can’t wait to get back on the pitch. Benjamin misses the matches, is a bit impatient, and we hope he will return soon to do what he feels most comfortable doing.”
Basanovic also admitted it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when Sesko will return: “It’s very hard to say precisely when he will be back. Ultimately, the medical team and the coach will decide. But I believe we will see Benjamin on the field soon, maybe even sooner than people expect right now.”
Regarding the relationship between Sesko and coach Amorim, Basanovic holds the new Manchester United boss in high regard: “I must say he has welcomed Benjamin wonderfully. Ruben is first and foremost an excellent person, very charismatic, extremely intelligent, and emotionally insightful. I think he knows what he’s doing. However, he is currently in a challenging situation.”
Manchester United faces a tough Christmas schedule with 4 Premier League matches before the New Year. They will start by hosting Bournemouth at home on December 16. Then, United will travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa on December 21, before returning to Old Trafford to host Newcastle United in the only Premier League fixture on Boxing Day (December 27). The “Red Devils” will close out 2025 with a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 31.
