Revealed statistics show MU's rapid decline under Amorim

Manchester United was once renowned for their ability to turn games around in the final minutes, especially during Sir Alex Ferguson's era. However, these qualities are rapidly fading under manager Ruben Amorim.

Recent data published by The Athletic clearly illustrates the alarming downturn of the Red Devils this season, particularly evident in their substitution effectiveness, which used to be a hallmark of the team. According to Opta statistics shared by The Athletic, Man Utd ranks among the worst teams for impact from substitute players in the Premier League, positioned 19th out of 20 in terms of the contributions made by players coming off the bench.

Even more shocking: No goals have been scored by Man Utd substitutes this season. Without a late assist from Ayden Heaven in the match against Brighton, the Red Devils would have been at the very bottom. This is a stark contrast to the “always winning late” spirit that Man Utd fans were familiar with years ago.

The Athletic points out that Ruben Amorim still substitutes forwards more than any other position. Forwards account for 24% of the total playing time of substitute players. But the problem lies in inconsistency from Zirkzee, and long-term injury to Benjamin Sesko despite high expectations. The attacking midfield is barely adjusted, resulting in a lack of creativity. The most frequently changed positions are midfield and wing-back, areas that do not generate attacking breakthroughs.

Notably, Amorim’s defensive substitutions have also caused Man Utd to drop points, highlighted by matches against Fulham early in the season and a recent draw with West Ham.

The substitute impact rankings (from The Athletic – Opta) reveal a significant gap between Man Utd and well-rounded teams like Brighton, Aston Villa, or Sunderland, which have between 7 and 13 direct contributions (goals + assists) from substitutes. Meanwhile, Man Utd has only… 1.

Additionally, Man Utd faces criticism for underperforming in the Premier League, lacking a distinct playing style, and having almost zero ability to change the course of matches. Especially, Amorim rarely relies on academy players, which is a sharp departure from the club’s tradition of nurturing young talent.

These factors, according to The Athletic, surely cause concern for the INEOS ownership group as the club drifts further away from the standards of a Premier League powerhouse.

The lack of impact from the bench reflects tactical deadlock and also shows Man Utd’s lack of squad depth and fighting spirit, two elements that once defined the club’s reputation. As the statistics become increasingly clear, the pressure on Ruben Amorim grows. The Red Devils must make swift changes or risk their season falling into crisis.
