Liverpool’s Ballon d’Or winner criticizes Mohamed Salah

Salah’s remarks following the Leeds game about his fractured relationship with Liverpool are now attracting significant attention in football circles.

Mohamed Salah caused a stir in English football by openly telling the media that he felt he was being “made a scapegoat” during Liverpool’s poor run of form. The Egyptian forward even stated that he has no relationship with coach Arne Slot and hinted at a possible departure by saying the upcoming match against Brighton might be his “farewell to Liverpool fans.”

Salah’s public statement immediately sparked controversy. However, many football experts found his actions unacceptable. Among them was Michael Owen, the most recent Liverpool player to win the Ballon d’Or.

“Oh Salah. I understand how you feel. You have carried this team for years and won every possible trophy. But football is a team sport, and you cannot say things like that publicly,” Owen wrote on social media. “You will be at AFCON in a week. At least be patient, enjoy representing your national team, and then see how things go when you return.”

Owen’s post received over 1.3 million views and attracted numerous comments. However, many Liverpool fans believe that even after AFCON, nothing will change.

“A reasonable point, but nothing will change after AFCON. In my opinion, Salah’s timing to speak out is completely appropriate,”a user commented under Owen’s post.

Sharing Owen’s view, former Blackburn and Celtic striker Chris Sutton also attacked Salah on social media:

“It’s shameful and disrespectful to teammates and the coach. Salah is no different from any other player. When form drops like this, he must accept being benched. But sadly, Salah thinks he is too good to be substituted.”

After the 3-3 draw against Leeds in the 15th round of the Premier League, Salah unexpectedly criticized Liverpool and coach Arne Slot for the decision to bench him:

“This is unacceptable to me. I don’t understand why this happened. I just can’t comprehend it. Elsewhere, any club would protect their player,” Salah expressed angrily. “I had to sit on the bench for the entire 90 minutes. The third time in a row, and probably the first time in my career. Honestly, I’m extremely disappointed. I have given so much to this club over many years, especially last season.

The 33-year-old star, who ranks third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list with 250 goals, has sparked mixed opinions by openly criticizing the club. Liverpool has yet to officially respond to Salah’s comments.
