Defender Jurriën Timber feels Arsenal need to use the harsh loss against Aston Villa as a driving force to get the Premier League title race back in the right direction.
Arsenal’s 18-match unbeaten streak across all competitions was ended when Emiliano Buendía scored in the final moments, securing a 2-1 victory for Aston Villa. It was a tough day for Mikel Arteta’s side as their lead at the top of the table shrank to just two points after Manchester City beat Sunderland.
Timber, who was forced to play as a center-back amid an injury crisis, said the whole team needs to use this defeat as motivation to push forward. He stated: “I think ultimately you have to treat it as motivation and turn that into strength because it happened and we have to accept it and play better. Throughout the season, moments like this will come, slips will happen, and you have to get back up afterward.”
Originally a right-back, Timber had to shift positions due to injuries to center-backs William Saliba and Gabriel. Recently, Cristhian Mosquera was also confirmed to be out for “a few weeks” with an ankle injury. Timber admitted these injuries have significantly impacted Arsenal’s journey.
He added: “Yes, it causes disruption. I think we have a strong squad. The players coming in do very well, but obviously, things are not always easy. We can’t play the same lineup every week, and when injuries keep happening, it becomes more difficult.”
“But I think that’s also part of the season. It happens at every club. It’s the same for us, and we just need to manage it and win our matches.”
Aston Villa’s win showed they have firmly inserted themselves into the title race by cutting Arsenal’s lead to three points. Unai Emery’s squad is in excellent form, having won 9 of their last 10 Premier League games. in the Premier League.
Villa took the lead at Villa Park through Matty Cash, but Leandro Trossard equalized for Arsenal early in the second half. Buendía’s last-minute goal sent the stadium into a frenzy. Cash said on the club’s official site:
“We have to take it game by game, keep working hard, and maintain the current momentum. We’re in good form, but the season is still long, not even Christmas yet. We need to keep demanding more, stay consistent, and see where that takes us..”
