Liverpool is said to be focusing on a club icon amid Arne Slot’s inability to fulfill management’s hopes.
According to an exclusive report from DaveOCKOP, Liverpool is considering naming Steven Gerrard as interim manager if Arne Slot is dismissed. This would mark an emotional return for the legend who rose through the club’s academy and became one of its greatest icons. Previously, Gerrard, who won the UEFA Champions League with The Kop in 2005, managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, winning the Scottish Premiership in the 2020–21 season, before moving on to Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.
Besides Gerrard, Anfield is also reportedly interested in Julian Nagelsmann, who is likely to leave the German national team after the 2026 World Cup.
These moves come as Liverpool sinks deeper into crisis. The team under Arne Slot has lost 6 of their last 9 Premier League matches. Although they recently beat West Ham 2-0, Liverpool quickly disappointed by drawing 1-1 with Sunderland at Anfield just 72 hours later. The struggles continued as The Kop were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Leeds United, with Ao Tanaka scoring a last-minute equalizer, capping a second half filled with six goals.
The situation worsened when Liverpool suffered a heavy 1-4 defeat against PSV in the Champions League at home, prompting boos from the Anfield crowd. Just months after helping Liverpool win the Premier League, Arne Slot now faces immense pressure over his coaching position.
Beyond tactical issues, internal tensions have surfaced at Liverpool, with the relationship between Mohamed Salah and Arne Slot reportedly broken down. The Egyptian star has been frequently benched and openly admitted feeling blamed and even pushed aside by the club. Despite affirming his love and dedication to Liverpool, Salah stated he cannot accept the current situation.
All these factors cast serious doubt over Arne Slot’s future, while the prospect of Steven Gerrard returning to Anfield becomes increasingly likely.
