Thomas Muller acknowledged the heavy pain of losing to Messi’s Inter Miami, also stating, “we lost the match by our own mistakes” and pledging to return more powerful in the next season.
Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami officially claimed the 2025 MLS Cup title after a 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps, concluding a historic season. But as Messi lifted his first-ever MLS trophy, the camera lingered on Thomas Muller—who had often troubled Messi before but this time ended up on the losing side.
Muller’s silence following the final whistle spoke louder than words. When interviewed by TSN, the German forward could not hide his sorrow: “We are sad, but at the same time proud of this season and the whole team. Happy is not the right word, but I remain very optimistic about the future.”
Muller frankly acknowledged that the defeat was not only due to Messi’s brilliance but also Whitecaps’ own errors: “Congratulations to Miami. They are worthy champions. But… we lost the game ourselves. We were too inaccurate in many situations. We didn’t perform to our potential.”
Whitecaps dominated moments of the final: Ali Ahmed equalized, Emmanuel Sabbi hit both goalposts, creating the impression that the Canadian team controlled the match. Yet, in just two moments, Messi stole the ball from Andres Cubas and assisted consecutively for Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende, ending Vancouver’s dream.
Muller did not shy away from his team’s shortcomings: “We are young. We are still developing. My expectations are always high, but we have many things to improve next season.” He also revealed being tightly marked: “Falken was closely marking me, but the problem was not only man-marking. We didn’t build our play well. In big matches, we need to be braver.”
Despite the painful loss, Muller maintained his characteristic fighting spirit: “We have many fans and family here. They deserve this title. But when you lose it yourself, the responsibility is on you. We will come back stronger next season. I am very sure about that.”
This defeat does not overshadow Vancouver Whitecaps’ excellent season — a team that advanced from 9th place last season straight to the MLS final, something never seen before Muller’s era. But at Chase Stadium, the main story remained Messi. With the MLS Cup title, the Argentine superstar became the first player ever to hold the complete set of World Cup, Champions League, Copa America, and MLS Cup trophies.
