David Beckham, chairman and co-owner of Inter Miami, confirmed that he once made a special offer to Lionel Messi regarding his post-retirement plans, but Messi immediately declined.
Under Beckham’s leadership, Inter Miami has just achieved its biggest goal since its inception: winning the MLS Cup. Lionel Messi played a crucial role with two assists and outstanding performances throughout the Playoffs to lead the team to the championship.
Many believe this could be one of Messi’s final club-level titles, and discussions about his retirement timing and future plans have begun. Messi’s decision will largely depend on where he wants to live.
After the historic victory, Beckham shared that he really wanted Messi to settle in Miami after retiring, but Messi quickly made it clear that his priority was to live near Barcelona. Beckham revealed: “I signed the greatest player of all time. I told him I wanted him to live in Miami after retirement, but Messi said he only thinks about living close to Camp Nou. No player loves Barcelona as much as he does.”
This is completely understandable, as Messi has spent most of his career in Spain, building not only a football legacy but also a family there. The memories, milestones, and deep affection for Barcelona are irreplaceable. This might even suggest that he will stay connected to Barca in a managerial or coaching role in the future.
Besides the MLS Cup victory, the final held greater significance as it marked the farewell of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, two close teammates of Messi for over a decade. Both decided to retire and are expected to return to Spain. Their relationship is more than teammates; it has become a close friendship.
Messi shared about this moment: “We are very happy because this is one of the team’s biggest goals. We won the Leagues Cup and had an amazing year. The whole team worked tirelessly. I’m happy with what we achieved and especially happy for them. Ending their careers this way is beautiful and well deserved. Today closes a very special chapter, and I wish them all the best.”
Now, all attention turns to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Messi is in excellent form but has not yet confirmed his participation. In an interview with Gaston Edul after the World Cup draw , Messi admitted he needs some rest:
“It has been a very long year with many matches, heavy and stressful. We also played the Club World Cup, which was a great experience but very tiring. Now it’s time to rest and prepare for what lies ahead, have a good preseason, and start strong as always.”
Messi overshadowed by unprecedented scoring record in MLS Cup Inter Miami officially won the 2025 MLS Cup after a convincing victory over Vancouver Whitecaps. The brightest star of this journey was Tadeo Allende, the Argentine striker having the most explosive season of his career by breaking the playoff scoring record. See more
