Liverpool plans to bring the legend back to Anfield

A performance crisis in the Premier League is forcing Liverpool to consider major changes on the coaching staff.

According to multiple sources in England, the management at Anfield has started seriously contemplating parting ways with Arne Slot and bringing Steven Gerrard back as interim head coach until the end of the season.

Slot’s future has become more uncertain than ever following a disappointing 1-1 draw against newly promoted Sunderland at Anfield. The visitors unexpectedly took the lead through Chemsdine Talbi, creating a tense atmosphere in the stands. Nordi Mukiele’s own goal only saved Liverpool from defeat but couldn’t hide the worrying decline of the current Premier League champions.

After 14 rounds, Liverpool has dropped to 9th place, trailing league leaders Arsenal by 11 points. The season is not even halfway through, yet the chance to defend the title is slipping away. Consecutive dropped points against weaker opponents have exhausted the management’s patience.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool’s internal discussions have included private meetings about Slot’s future. His dismissal this month is quite possible, even though the club would have to pay around £8 million in compensation for the remaining contract.

In this context, Steven Gerrard emerges as the most suitable candidate to take over the team immediately. The Anfield legend is currently free and not tied to any club, making negotiations easier for Liverpool.

Notably, Rangers had invited Gerrard back to manage the team in October during their crisis, but he declined, hoping to find an opportunity to return to English football. This greatly increases the likelihood Gerrard would accept if Liverpool offers him a deal, even if only as an interim coach until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Bringing Gerrard back to Anfield would not only stabilize the players’ morale but also generate a positive reaction among fans. As the club needs a significant boost to revive its form, the club icon could be a strategic choice.

Currently, Slot and his squad are preparing for a difficult away match against Leeds United. However, regardless of the result at Elland Road, the Dutch coach’s future remains highly uncertain. If things do not improve, Gerrard is very likely to once again emerge from Anfield’s tunnel to save Liverpool.
