The ongoing inquiry has resulted in the arrest of multiple footballers, including players from the Istanbul powerhouses Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.
The sports betting scandal rattling Turkish football continues to develop with fresh updates. The most recent took place on Friday, when the Public Prosecutor's Office initiated a significant operation leading to 46 arrest warrants for players, coaches, and referees.
Among those implicated is Mert Hakan Yandas, the 31-year-old midfielder and current captain of Fenerbahce. He is accused of placing bets on his own team's matches via legal websites using intermediaries. Additionally, Yandas has not played any minutes this season, despite being a key figure under Jose Mourinho in past seasons.
Among the other 26 players detained is Metehan Baltaci from Galatasaray. Metin Korkmaz, president of Adanademirspor, and Emrah Celik, sporting director of Antalyaspor, were the active officials taken into custody.
According to the released statement, authorities began arrests at 7:15 AM local time, with most suspects detained in Istanbul province. Five individuals are abroad and are being tracked to ensure their appearance before the courts.
