Beginning his coaching career as a newcomer, the former Blue defender swiftly demonstrated his capability, guiding Flamengo to their most triumphant season ever.
Ex-Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has become a sensation in Brazilian football, capturing all the top honors in Samba football within just 14 months as Flamengo’s head coach.
Flamengo recently completed the prestigious double of Serie A and Copa Libertadores, officially joining the elite group of only five clubs in Brazilian football history to achieve this. Not long before, Luis’s squad conquered South America by winning the Copa Libertadores. Just days later, they defeated Palmeiras 1-0, edging closer to the national title, and then secured a 1-0 victory over Ceara to clinch their ninth Brazil Serie A championship.
For Flamengo, this is their most glorious season. For Filipe Luis, it’s been an incredible journey. Taking charge in September 2024 without prior first-team coaching experience, Luis surprisingly led the club to win every possible trophy: from Copa do Brasil, Brazil Super Cup, Campeonato Carioca to the double of Libertadores and the prestigious Serie A.
After achieving this historic feat, the young coach enthusiastically stated: "In a few years, the players will truly realize the history they have made. My players are immortal."
Not only did Flamengo secure all domestic titles, but under Luis they are also aiming for history by preparing to compete in the Intercontinental Cup. They will face Cruz Azul on December 10th for a semifinal spot. If they overcome the Mexican side, Flamengo will meet Egypt’s Pyramids before dreaming of a final showdown against last season’s Champions League winners, PSG. Champions League last season.
An interesting detail is that this season’s Flamengo squad includes many familiar faces who have played in the English Premier League such as Jorginho, Danilo, Emerson Royal, and Saul Niguez. The blend of European experience and Brazilian technical style has created overwhelming strength, making Flamengo an unstoppable force.
With his achievements so far, Filipe Luis is proving he is not only a top-class defender who succeeded in Europe but also a promising strategist in world football. If he maintains this form, it wouldn’t be surprising if Flamengo wins even more titles and Luis becomes a prominent name in global coaching.
