Ahead of the 2025 MLS Cup final, Jordi Alba emotionally announced that the game versus Vancouver Whitecaps will mark the final chapter of his distinguished career with Inter Miami.
On the eve of the 2025 MLS Cup final between Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps, veteran defender Jordi Alba admitted that his final career match will bring him unprecedented emotions. At 36 years old, the former Barcelona star is preparing to officially retire after over two decades at the top level and hopes to conclude with a trophy.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Alba shared emotionally: “I have played many finals, but this one feels different. This is not just a game; it’s my farewell to football. Winning the cup would be the perfect ending.”
Joining Inter Miami in 2023 alongside Sergio Busquets, Alba has experienced two impressive seasons with the young team, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. For him, the MLS Cup final is not only a title contest but also a historic milestone for the club founded in 2020.
“Inter Miami has grown tremendously, and reaching the final is already a historic achievement. Even though this is my last match, I feel as excited as I did on my debut,” Alba added.
When asked if his feelings now are similar to when he left Barcelona, Alba fell silent: “It’s very different. When I left Barca, I knew I would keep playing elsewhere. This time, I know I won’t step on the pitch again. It’s a bigger, more emotional turning point.”
Alba also expressed gratitude to the Inter Miami coach, who was once his teammate back then: “I’m very lucky to have played alongside him and now be coached by that same friend. He has done a great job, and I’m proud to be part of this team.”
Over a career spanning more than 20 years, Jordi Alba has collected almost every major honor: 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012, 2015 Champions League, six La Liga titles, and many domestic cups. Reflecting on his journey, he could not hide his pride: “I have achieved more than I ever dreamed of. From a boy in L'Hospitalet to a world champion, it’s been an incredible journey. I’m grateful to every club and teammate who accompanied me.”
The upcoming final will also mark the farewell of Sergio Busquets, Alba’s close teammate for over 15 years at Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Both will end their careers wearing Inter Miami’s pink jersey, closing a beautiful chapter under the Florida sunset.
Alba said: “I know I will miss football deeply, but I have no regrets. I leave with a full heart and hope to step onto the field one last time with a smile.”
