As speculation grows that Kyle Tucker could make his signing decision this week, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that out of the three final contenders vying for Tucker, the Toronto Blue Jays stand alone in potentially proposing a 10-year contract.
Previous reports indicated that the New York Mets might be prepared to offer Tucker a higher average annual salary—possibly around $50 million per year—for a contract lasting about three to four years, with the Los Angeles Dodgers also involved. In an interview with Sportsnet, Passan said, “I believe we’ll see a decision this week, maybe even sooner... So far, the Toronto Blue Jays are clearly the only team showing the potential to offer a contract as long as ten years.”
Tucker will turn 29 on January 17. If he signs a short-term deal with a high average annual salary, he could re-enter free agency in his early 30s; alternatively, a 10-year contract might cover the remainder of his professional career.
