Last year, the outfielder Dean, who made a crucial play in the World Series, was again designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants.

Justin Dean, the outfielder who raised his hand to signal to the umpire that the ball was stuck in the outfield padding during Game 6 of last year’s World Series, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers secure the win, was released by the Dodgers after the season and then signed by the San Francisco Giants. Today, the Giants designated him for assignment (DFA) to clear a roster spot for newly acquired right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle.

Dean made his Major League debut with the Dodgers last year, mainly serving as a defensive substitute, appearing in 18 games, and was included on the team’s postseason roster.

In the top of the ninth inning of Game 6 of the World Series, with the Dodgers leading by two runs and a runner on first with no outs, the Blue Jays hit a deep fly ball to left-center field that got stuck beneath the outfield padding. Dean immediately raised his hand to signal, and the umpire eventually ruled it a “ground rule double,” a call that helped the Dodgers secure the victory.

After the game, Dean said, “I immediately raised my hand to signal that the ball was stuck.” He also mentioned that since the opposing runner was still advancing, even though he understood the rules and respected the umpire’s decision, he couldn’t help but feel nervous: “What if it wasn’t ruled a ground rule double?”

After the season ended last November, the Dodgers released Dean, and the Giants signed him soon after. However, less than two months later, Dean was once again designated for assignment by the team.
