Korean pitcher Ko Woo-sik officially inked a deal with the Detroit Tigers today. After attempting to break into the Major Leagues through the bidding system in 2024, he spent the last two seasons developing in the minors and has not yet reached the Major League level. He will keep striving within the American baseball framework this upcoming season.
During the 2023 offseason, Ko Woo-sik entered the Major League system through the bidding process and initially signed a two-year contract worth $4.5 million with the San Diego Padres. However, after spring training, the Padres decided to start him in Double-A for the new season. Midway through 2024, the Padres traded him to the Miami Marlins as part of the Luis Arraez deal.
After joining the Marlins, Ko Woo-sik's progress remained challenging. Last season, after being released by the team, he joined the Detroit Tigers, where he appeared in 14 games at Triple-A, pitching 21 innings, allowing 19 hits (including 3 home runs), issuing 11 walks, and striking out 22, with an ERA of 4.29.
Previously, Ko Woo-sik served as a closer for the LG Twins in the Korean Baseball Organization, recording 42 saves in the 2022 season with an ERA as low as 1.48. Over his KBO career, he amassed 138 saves, ranking third all-time in the team's save records.
